In Camera Raw, I adjusted the temperature - adding more yellow, increased the contrast, and brought the saturation levels down. In Photoshop, I cropped the photo, lightened the eyes, added a bit more contrast, and adjusted the green level.
For the second version, in Photoshop, I started with the adjusted image, desaturated it, adjusted the variations by adding red and yellow. I then desaturated the image a bit more.
