Design inspired

I've came across some videos on design today and wanted to share them with you. They inspire me to be a better designer. First two posts via Twitter from @LogoMotives.

Weekly dose of inspiration

Yellena James creates incredible drawings and paintings. I first came across her work on Etsy while browsing for who knows what. I easily get distracted on my original intent when visiting Etsy. There is so much to look at and so many creative people out there, it's easy to lose focus.
I've purchased three of Yellena's prints so far. I'm not sure where they are going in my house yet, but for now, they are safely stored away. Her style is unique, whimsical and full of details. I visualize underwater life — anemone, coral reefs, octopus and jellyfish floating in a sea of illustrative beauty. Her pen and ink work blows me away. The first three below are ones I've purchased, and the rest are ones I also appreciate! Visit her Etsy site to see more work or visit her blog.

Shots of inspiration

This week, I'm focusing on wine labels and spirits. No, I'm not promoting alcohol just the packaging. So many varieties, so many labels. Some are poorly designed, others stand out. The Boxhead Shiraz below is one I came across and bought for the interesting label plus it was a Shiraz (my fave) double bonus. It's fun and executed well which makes it standout in the sea of sameness on the shelves. The others below have caught my eye in one way or another.

A dose of Inspiration: earth

ECO BAGS
For Earth Day today, I'm featuring a friend of mine that sells Eco Bags and Eco-friendly apparel at earthawareness.com. She works with a local artist in Wichita to design the bags. The bags are then printed by Skreened made to order. If you haven't heard of Skreened, you'll be happy to know they are responsible in sourcing, committed to the earth, use water-based inks for printing and they make investments to projects on kiva.org. The bags may seem a bit pricer than what you can buy at your local grocery store, but you know where these originated from, plus they will last much longer than a $2 bag. It's perfect for books, laptops, lunches and groceries. I use mine everyday! Here are some of my favorite designs.

REUSE YOUR TEES
I first came across this post on my friend's blog, Kommunicated. You take your old graphic tees, do a little snip and sew action and turn it into a t-shirt dress for a little one. Simply adorable. The online tutorial can be found at our hartbeat.

A dose of inspiration

This week, I am focusing on the illustrations of Wayne Brezinka. He's an illustrator, designer and creator out of Nashville. I am intrigued by his ability to transform paper into imaginative works of art that tell a story. His work creates visual interest in a very unique way. He inspires me to push my work more conceptually and to come up with different avenues to problem solving. I appreciate his attention to detail. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

The first dose of inspiration

I do a lot of creating, photography and baking on my blog, and I am going to start focusing on things that inspire me. Once a week (my goal) I will feature something I've came across over the past week that's inspired me. It could be anything. Type, art, patterns, clothing, a photographer — the possibilities are endless. Being a graphic designer, I am constantly seeking visual stimulation, trends, color, illustration, exploring new and creative techniques — I could go on and on. There are so many things that wow me (and there are so many things that don't). I'll show you what I like and what drives me to become a better designer, creator, baker and photographer. I'll title these posts "A dose of inspiration". Let the good times begin!

One of my favorite blogs, How About Orange, blogged about some gifts she received for her birthday. That's when I first came across this stunning jewelry, and I'm not a big jewelry girl. I wear the standard wedding ring, thumb ring, earrings and the occasional necklace. But this is different. It's art. It's laser cut! ( I <3 laser cut.) Each piece is so unique and I can't quit looking at them! The site is molly m designs and listed below are a several of my favorite pieces. She even sells laser cut prints. Besides purchasing from this site, the closest location to me is Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Next time Jake and I are there, we'll have to swing by to check out the jewelry and see what new installation Kemper has up.
I tried to narrow these down...

I prefer to visually tell stories through photographs; whether a trip I was on, a dessert I made or a recent vintage find. Art is all around me, and I capture it whenever I can.
