The combined force of food and photography

My two favorites things coming together. I drove to Kansas City a few weeks ago to art direct a photoshoot. It's for a project I've been working on for about a year at my current job. I can't go into specifics about the project, but the shoot involved food and the highly talented photographer, David Morris. When I walked into his studio, it was love at first sight. Open ceilings, a full kitchen and plenty of open space.

View across the street from the studio.

A few tricks of the trade.

Tables of cutlery, napkins, tablecloths and serving platters.

View of the kitchen. Isn't it lovely?! There was a team of seven, including myself, working on this shoot. Each talented person had a special role to play in the process of the photo. I was so stoked to be apart of it.

The uber talented food stylist. I really enjoyed watching her work — in a non-creepy way.

David Morris in action, setting up the shot.

A little bit of heaven.

Prep work.

Fun items in his space.

These are not the final versions, but it will give you a good idea of the day and work from David Morris.

So thankful to be apart of this day!

reflections

-1
Jake and I recently upgraded our PCS text/phone call only device to an EVO. I have no idea why we waited so long to upgrade. Okay, is was solely based on cost for me. We couldn't take it anymore, so we made the switch (which really means I gave in). We are still trying to figure out the video chat though. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. We have the front facing cameras but are missing a step when it comes to the live chats.
On a recent somewhat warm day, I walked around with my phone and took pictures. I wanted to see what I kind of camera I was working with. So far I'm digging the results and look forward to further play.

Thomas the Train cake

The last cake in the triplet series is for Izzy, she's the youngest. Her request: Thomas the Train. With this cake, I felt most pressed for time. It was the last one to make and I began early Saturday morning. I liked the way it turned out, but since I felt rushed, I could have done better. Hey it's just the perfection coming out of me - I can't help it.

Miss Izzy.

Thomas was made out of these cake shapes...

and turned into this. I had a lot of cake leftover from all three cakes so I made cake balls of course!

The base. I really like the wheels, but the more I worked on the train, the heavier it became and started crushing the wheels.

When I saw this banner, I thought it looked familar. I asked Maranda if she used the DIY tutorial on my blog from last year. She had! That's exciting. She simplified the process which is a great idea because the other one took forevs.
triplets aftermath
This is the aftermath of triplet gifts. I was amazed. I can only imagine what their Christmas looks like.

Pretty decorations around the house. I'm a sucker for poms.

I am pretty sure this was Izzy's favorite gift. It's Jack Skellington. I bet she has it with her right now. Happy Birthday to Izzy! I look forward to watching the girls grow even more this next year. They are such special gifts to anyone that knows them.

Tangled cake

Yesterday Lily's tiger cake was featured. Today it's Audrey's Tangled cake. Audrey is the middle child of the three. Her and I share that in common. Tomorrow will be Izzy's requested cake.

This cake was a little intimidating. Since I haven't made a doll cake before, I kind of just went with the flow and made decisions along the way. My friend Andrea helped out on this cake as well.

Andrea shaping the dress.

Hair pieces in the works.

I knew there was no way I could sculpture cake for the upper torso and it look halfway decent, therefore it became all fondant. She somehow became one curvaceous Rapunzel.

Scary bald alien head — but sculpted wonderfully.

Happy Birthday, Audrey!
