Unfortunately, I need to take a break from my blog for a little while. I'm hoping it's just for a few weeks, but it may be up to a month. I have a lot of creative projects to take care of and several photo sessions lined up. I hope you'll stick around to see what I've been up to when I return. You've been so supportive of my blog with all of your wonderful comments, and I thank you for it. I'll be back soon! <3

I heart faces theme: smirk

This week's photo challenge at I Heart Faces is a smirk — a smile evoking insolence, scorn, or offensive smugness. My niece is full of them. She laughs immediately after she poses like this. Actually, she didn't quite make the straight face without smiling because she's so full of giggles. She always makes me laugh. If you follow my blog, you may have seen this picture. It was taken when I was in South Carolina hanging out with family on Murray Lake in Columbia.

Jamaican jerk grilled kebabs

jamaican jerk grilled kebabs

This is one of my favorite meals to make whenever I fire up the grill. Kebabs are quick and easy with little cleanup — always a bonus. The recipe has a very bold flavor pairing the sweet and spicy together. You make your own jerk seasoning instead of buying one that contains a lot of sodium. I served the kebabs with brown rice.

Jamaican Jerk Grilled Kebabs

from Cuisine at Home Magazine, Issue No.76 Aug 09

INGREDIENTS
FOR THE GLAZE
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
juice of one lime
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp. fresh oregano, minced
1 tbsp. lime peel, grated
1 tbsp. onion powder
1 tbsp. light brown sugar
1/2 tsp. ground all spice
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
FOR THE KEBABS
1 lb. chicken breasts, boneless and skinless, cut into 1-inch pieces
8 oz. smoked turkey sausage, reduced sodium, cut into 1-inch pieces
2-3 green bell peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces

DIRECTIONS
Preheat grill to med-high heat. Brush grill rack with oil.
Combine all ingredients for the glaze. Whisk well. Set aside half the glaze for serving.
Thread chicken, sausage and bell pepper pieces onto eight 10-inch skewers.
Grill skewers, covered, over direct heat until chicken is no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Turn skewers and brush with glaze every two minutes during grilling, using all the glaze in the bowl. Just before serving, brush skewers with reserved glaze.
Serve with rice.

Thread chicken, sausage and pepper pieces onto skewers. If using wooden skewers, first soak them for 30 minutes.

Instead of using a dry rub, this glaze keeps the kebabs moist during grilling.

Jayden

Meet Jayden. He's the cousin to the previous three kids I've blogged about this week. Jayden has been through so much at such a young age. Back in March he had a kidney transplant. I can't imagine what that was like for him and his family. Six months later, he's seems like a very active and happy young boy. Jayden has such a fun personality and really cheesed it up for the camera at times. He also has some amazing blue eyes.

Colden

Colden, the big brother to Collin and newborn Karis. He is a photographer's dream. Colden is very well mannered, likes to smile and was willing to pose for me at any moment. He was a lot of fun to work with. Plus, look at that face. Such a handsome little guy!

Collin

Next up from the photoshoot is Collin. He is Baby Karis' older brother and the middle child out of the three. How cute is he? He was very shy the majority of the time and was realy unsure of me being there. I think his non-smiling faces are just as cute.

It was quite windy that day, but I didn't have issues of that showing up in the photos. His hair is windblown a little here, but not too bad. It's a good thing I was working with three boys instead of three girls. There would of been a lot of hair in the face shots.

In the background is Colden, his older brother. He will be the subject of tomorrow's post.

Collin gave in for about 1 minute. Smiles and cheeses!

Baby Karis

Last week I blogged about spending my free time editing photos from a past shoot. This week I'm focusing on one child a day from that shoot and showing you my favorites. This is Karis, just 9 days old.

Love birds painting party

Last night my friend Bridgette and I arranged a girl's night out at Paint the Towne, a local art studio where an instructor walks you through a painting we had selected. I have a previous post about the same place when my niece Morgan had her butterfly painting party there. It's so much fun for all ages, but as an adult you can BYOB.
Everyone's painting turned out great! I really like that no two are the same. You listen and watch the instructor, then you interpret the painting however you see fit. There are no mistakes (you can always paint over them).
There are quite a few pictures here, but I didn't want to leave anyone out. Plus you can see how different the paintings really are.

The painting hanging on the wall on the right is what we based the design off of. Jessie, the instructor, created a second painting as we went through the steps.

My finished painting.
