Graduation cake

Using the fondant from the previous post, I made a standard yellow cake and decorated it for my aunt's graduation party over the weekend. I wanted her to have a cake that was really fun instead of the congrats graduate flat version.

I trimmed the cake layers and cut out foam board to place underneath each layer. It gave the cake extra support and it made cake cutting so easy.

Stacked version

First I covered the cake in buttercream frosting so the fondant would stick.

I love the smooth surface. There are several steps I left out from here to the next picture. I was more worried about completing the cake than taking anymore pictures. The following morning though I was ready to take pictures of the final product. :o)

    Stunning!

    Fondant intimidates me.

Then again, so do magazine salespeople. So I may be a whimp. ; )
