DIY party hats

One of the final touches to the party are these birthday hats. Pam and I found a tutorial at Prudent Baby and used the paper template to cut out the shape. For the full tutorial you can use the Prudent Baby's post. We didn't use brads on the punch out holes and used an elastic string we had on hand. I used a large circle punch for the green and pink circles and used and exacto knife to cut out the number one, then applied with hot glue. It's a pretty quick and easy project.

Kids of all ages can wear them.

It's a good looking hat and makes the kids happy.

Maybe not all of them. Sophie's hat band broke, and I think it scared her. Still a cute face!

DIY birthday banner

The birthday banner is the first project Pam and I worked on for the party. We started with the tutorial found at Vanilla Joy and went from there. A few changes from our version: we used a standard font from the computer, sized it appropriately to fit the banner, printed and cut out. We pinned the letters to felt, trimmed out and applied with hot glue.
If I create another banner in the future, I'll keep the letters closer together. Trial and error. We were both happy with the overall results though. If you didn't catch the theme, it's green and pink polka dots.

DIY fabric poms

DIY fabric pom
This week the theme is DIY party decor. Pam and I created these beautiful poms for her daughter's birthday party. Each one takes time and effort but the results are worth it. (I wish I had some white poms at my wedding).
Expect to spend 2-3 hours on each pom including cutting out the fabric, folding and the gluing process. We found the original tutorial at Once Wed.
Instead of Chinese lanterns as our base, we used styrofoam balls of varying sizes. I would say at least two yards of fabric per pom. It's much faster if you quadruple up the fabric so you are cutting several layers of circles at a time (however many layers your scissors can take). To attach the hanging ribbon to the pom we used ball head pins. Here are the poms we created.

DIY Cupcake Stand

Saturday was little Sophie's birthday party. My friend Pam, Sophie's momma, and I have been knee-deep in projects for the past few weeks. We created several items for the party that I'll feature on my blog this week. First up: the cupcake stand.

I originally found this tutorial on my friend Kylie's blog Kommunicated. She made a few stands for her son's birthday party. The stands are easy to make and requires just a few materials. We substituted foam core board in place of the cardboard. Foam core is sturdy, cheap and easy to work with. Cardboard will work fine, but make sure it's fairly thick. We also modified the bases so the paper hangs out further than the wrapped piece underneath it. The original tutorial can be found at Prudent Baby.
