I made this cake last month for my friend Carl who turned 30. One of his passions in life are bikes. His wife Sarah asked if I would make a bicycle cake for his birthday party. Of course I said yes. You can find a few pictures of the Heberts in Tandem party on their blog.
Let me start out by saying this cake was intimidating. I wasn't sure how I was going to go about this. I had so many ideas, but none seemed like a viable options. I decided to figure it out along the way.
I started with the easiest part - the wheels. Not much to them.
I went off of the top right picture on the table for a bike reference. I began shaping the structure of the bike.
Covered the cake in fondant
Added in the detail
I like the handlebar grips.
Carl was very surprised when I brought the cake over. Sarah and I kept it a secret. This was my most challenging cake to date. It was worth it though. Happy 30th Carl!

wow!very nice. what kind of cake do you use that is good for carving such as the bike?
Abigail, I use a boxed cake mix to save time. :)
Thanks Amy.
Amy, I am so pleased to have found your blog. My son's best friend is mad about bikes and is having a bike birthday party - his mum asked me to make the cake and I was at a loss as to what to do until I found this. Thank you do much for sharing with us and providing some very appreciated inspiration!
Amy, this cake is amazing. I was wondering what size board you had it on, the size of the cakes and the amount of fondent icing you used. I know this was a while ago but a rough idea would be great. I want to make a similar cake for my husband. Cheers
The size of the board is pretty close to the regular size of a foam core board. I cut it down a bit, maybe a few inches from the length. The size of the cakes - the wheels are 8-inch rounds trimmed just a bit for shaping. The other cake was a 9 x 12. I cut all the pieces out of that. I only made one batch of fondant. You can find the recipe for that on the blog as well. I'd love to see your finished version!
Wow this is amazing! I am planning on trying to recreate this for my partners 40th Birthday, he ia a mad biker! Do you have the dimensions of how you cut out the bike frame part from the 9" x 12" cake? Thanks!
Chapeau! That is really impressive. I am preparing a surprise birthday party, and i am thinking to give it a try, is the fondant batch (16 oz. bag mini marshmallows 3 tbsp. water
2 lbs. powdered sugar)as per your blog, for all the cake? I am not an expert as you and i may waste some :) so is it enough? and can i use boiled jam instead of frosting between the cake and fondant? Many thanks
