Whoo whoo owl cake

Whenever life gets busy and slightly overwhelming, my blog is typically the first thing I set aside. I started a new job three weeks ago, and I have projects coming out the wazoo. I plan on posting at least once a week so you can see a little of what I've been up to. One of the projects I completed on Saturday is a cake for a birthday girl who turned one. One a scale of 1 to 10 for cuteness, I think it's a 10. I loved how it turned out.

These are the boob cakes - the start of the owl.

Shaped

Iced and fondant work

I painted the "feathers" with food coloring for a bit of visual texture.

  36. I'm going to attempt to make this this weekend... my daughter is turning 5 and has expressed a desire for an owl cake (though pink, with blue wings, purple eyes & yellow tummy - as you do). Wish me luck - if it turns out ok I'll post a link to a photo! I've never worked with fondant before... thanks for giving the steps :-)

  37. http://www.flickr.com/photos/chooknage/6061408917/in/photostream it's not as professional-looking as yours, but it is at least owl-ish. Thanks for again for the directions. My Miss E loves it :-)

  41. Hi, I was wondering what you used to bake the cake in? I have seen others use glass pyrex bowls that are preheated oven safe. Is that what you used? If not, would it work? Will the cake cook through? I'm sorry for all the questions but hubby won't let me spend money on said bowl unless a true cook/baker gives it the go ahead.

  42. Ana, I used a cake mold for a soccer ball/golf ball. It is two half circles with a little stand for support. You should be able to get it at most decor stores.

  44. I would love to make this cake for my daughter's first b-day in Oct. I've never use fondant. Can you buy it already made and in different colors? What about cutters. Can you buy cutters to cut out the feather shapes, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes. You can buy pre-made fondant in different colors. There are tons of cutters out there. If you do a little browsing, I'm pretty sure you can find exactly what you're wanting. :)
